New Shipping Container Village For South Shields

A dazzling new shipping container village is set to be built in South Shields town centre, creating 35 new jobs.

The development, Jack’s Yard, will redevelop the outdoor drinking terrace of the Clover & Wolf bar, and transform the site into a two-storey shipping container village which aims to revitalise the area, reports the Shields Gazette.

Jack’s Yard will feature a central courtyard, retail units and a food and drink unit on the ground floor, with a drinks serving and dining area on the first-floor balcony. The developers plan to use the space to host several ‘pop up’ events, including sporting events, family activities, and themed fun days.

The planning documents submitted to South Tyneside Council say the new hub will create 35 new jobs - 10 full-time roles, and 25 part-time positions.

The development will begin by demolishing and levelling out the existing terraced area at Clover & Wolf, and new artwork will be commissioned for the shipping containers as well as festoon and accent lighting to help ‘enliven and enhance the yard at night.’

Planners say the retail village will bring benefits to the evening economy in the area, saying that the smaller independent retail units will complement larger retailers in the town centre.

A Design and Access statement from developers says Jack’s Yard represents a ‘progressive step in supporting the vitality of the town centre.’

The statement reads: “Many city centre and coastal resorts up and down the country are embracing the successful contribution made by shipping container developments. This development will allow the opportunity to offer affordable start-up units for new local businesses.”
